Regulatory Environment
Law 20.606 (2012) is implemented through Decreto 13/2015, which amended the Reglamento Sanitario de los Alimentos (DS 977/96, Ministry of Health) to require black octagonal 'ALTO EN' front-of-pack warnings wherever calorie, sugar, saturated-fat or sodium content exceeds Ministry of Health thresholds; the rule phased in across three stages between June 2016 and June 2019. SERNAPESCA (Servicio Nacional de Pesca y Acuicultura) governs fisheries and aquaculture compliance, including salmon and seafood labelling. Pharmaceutical packaging requires sanitary registration from the ISP (Instituto de Salud Pública), valid five years and renewable, with every application required to include a Spanish-language graphic labelling project. Wine, pisco and other alcoholic beverages fall under Law 18.455 and its regulation, Decreto 78 (Ministry of Agriculture, enforced by SAG), which mandates minimum label content and requires producers, bottlers and exporters to register with SAG.
Key Industries
Copper mining (Codelco; BHP's Escondida, the world's largest copper mine), lithium extraction (SQM, Albemarle), fresh fruit export (world's largest cherry exporter, chiefly to China), salmon and seafood export (world's second-largest salmon producer after Norway), and wine (Concha y Toro, Santa Rita).
Market Context — Chile
Chile's 2016 Food Labelling Law (Ley 20.606) — one of the world's strictest, and the model Colombia and others later copied — requires black octagonal 'ALTO EN' warning labels for calories, sugars, saturated fats and sodium on qualifying packaged foods, forcing near-universal redesign across the food sector since its phased 2016–2019 rollout. Beyond food, Chile's design demand is driven by resource and agri-export sectors at genuine global scale: the country produces roughly 23% of the world's mined copper (Codelco, BHP's Escondida) and holds the world's largest lithium reserves, extracted from the Salar de Atacama by SQM and Albemarle. Chilean cherry exports reached a record US$3.51 billion in 2024, nearly all destined for China, making Chile the world's largest cherry exporter, while salmon exports (Chile is the world's second-largest producer after Norway) reached roughly US$6.4 billion in 2024.
