VitaeChek's blood glucose monitoring system required precise technical documentation where clarity directly impacts patient safety — the manual needed to serve diabetic patients reliably across global retail distribution.
The Problem
The manual had to guide patients through lancet loading, blood sampling technique, meter calibration, test strip handling, and reading interpretation with absolute accuracy — where errors in understanding could directly affect patient health outcomes.
The Brief
Design a fully illustrated medical device manual with step-by-step procedural diagrams, a safety hierarchy distinguishing critical alerts from general notes, and high-contrast accessible typography appropriate for patients managing chronic conditions.
The Outcome
The completed manual provided a safety-focused, accessible reference that supported VitaeChek's patient education goals, aligned with medical device documentation standards, and reinforced product trust across healthcare retail distribution.
How We Did It
A medical documentation review was conducted — mapping the complete testing workflow for diabetic patients from lancet loading through blood sampling, test strip handling, meter calibration, reading interpretation, and data management.
Step-by-step procedural diagrams were created for the full testing sequence, illustrating lancet device preparation, lancing site selection, blood drop application to the test strip, and result reading interpretation.
Calibration code setup, strip insertion, memory management, and error code resolution were each given dedicated illustrated sections — supporting the full range of patient interactions with the device.
A safety hierarchy was applied to distinguish critical patient safety alerts (contamination risks, incorrect strip handling) from general usage notes, formatted to medical device consumer documentation standards throughout.
High-contrast accessible typography was specified for all procedural sections — appropriate for patients managing diabetes, including those with visual impairment, to support accurate safe self-testing across all age groups.
