Packaging Photography for E-Commerce: How to Shoot Product Packaging That Converts
In a physical retail environment, packaging sells the product directly — it sits on the shelf, it catches the eye, the customer picks it up. In e-commerce, the packaging cannot do this directly. The customer interacts with a photograph of the packaging. That photograph is the packaging's proxy — it must do the work the physical object does in retail, but through a screen, at a small size, in competition with dozens of other product photographs on the same page.
The quality and execution of packaging photography is one of the most significant variables in e-commerce conversion performance. Research by Amazon and third-party CRO studies consistently shows that the primary product image is the single largest driver of listing click-through rate — more than price, more than title, more than review count for first impressions.
This guide covers how to shoot packaging photography that performs across the three contexts where it matters most: Amazon, DTC websites, and social media.
The Role of Each Image in an E-Commerce Listing
Most product listings support multiple images — typically 5–9 on Amazon, unlimited on a DTC website. Each image in the set has a different job.
The hero image (primary listing image): The first image seen in search results and on the product listing page. This is the click-driver. Its job is to clearly communicate what the product is, make the packaging look as attractive as possible, and generate the click that takes the shopper to the product detail page. For most products, this is a clean, white-background photograph of the packaging.
Supporting pack shots: Additional angles, open packaging views, and scale references. These images convert interest (generated by the hero image) into confidence. A supplement jar shown from the back (revealing the supplement facts panel), a skincare serum shown with the dropper extended, a gift box shown open to reveal the contents — these images answer the questions a shopper has after the hero image generates interest.
Lifestyle images: The product in context — in use, in a setting, by a person. These images connect the product to the buyer's life and identity. They are important for conversion but secondary to the primary packaging photography in most categories.
Infographic images: A product shot with callout text highlighting key ingredients, certifications, or benefits. Common on Amazon for supplement and food products. These bridge packaging photography and copy — the image carries both visual and textual content.
Platform-Specific Requirements
Amazon
Amazon's image requirements are more specific than most DTC platforms and must be followed precisely for listings to be approved.
Primary image requirements:
- Pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255 — not off-white or light grey)
- Product must fill at least 85% of the image frame
- No props, text overlays, or additional graphic elements on the primary image
- No watermarks, borders, or mannequin/model legs cut off
- JPEG format, minimum 1,000px on the longest side (for zoom to activate — strongly recommended)
- sRGB colour space
Common primary image violations: Multiple products in the primary image when the listing is for a single unit; background that reads as white on a calibrated monitor but fails Amazon's automated white check; text or claim overlays that should be on the A+ content or infographics instead.
Secondary images: Amazon allows significant flexibility on secondary images. Lifestyle photography, infographics, comparison charts, and ingredient callouts are all permitted. 360° photography is supported on some categories.
DTC Website
DTC product pages have more creative freedom than Amazon. The primary product image should still clearly communicate the product and its packaging, but it does not need to follow the white-background rule. Common DTC primary image formats:
- Clean white or light neutral background (most widely applicable)
- Styled flat lay on a textured surface (marble, linen, wood — common for beauty, food, wellness)
- Environmental or contextual background (relevant for outdoor, sport, and lifestyle products)
- Dark or richly coloured backgrounds (common for premium spirits, luxury cosmetics)
For DTC, the image set is often more expansive than for Amazon — detailed shots of packaging texture and finish, unboxing imagery showing the complete delivery experience, ingredient photography, and brand story imagery.
Social Media
Instagram and Pinterest treat packaging photography as content. The requirements differ from e-commerce platform requirements in important ways:
Ratio matters. Instagram favours square (1:1) and portrait (4:5) formats in feed; stories and reels are 9:16. A product photograph shot in landscape (3:2 camera ratio) will need to be cropped for optimal Instagram performance.
Scroll-stopping quality. Social feeds move fast. Packaging photographs for social need more visual energy than catalogue photographs for e-commerce. Strong colour, interesting composition, and sharp visual contrast perform better than neutral, catalogue-style shots.
Authenticity in context. Lifestyle and in-use photographs consistently outperform pure pack shots on social media. A product photograph that shows the packaging as part of a real or plausibly real life context — on a desk, on a bathroom shelf, being poured, being used — connects more directly with the audience.
Shooting Packaging: Technical Fundamentals
Lighting for Pack Shots
The most common lighting failure in packaging photography is uncontrolled reflection. Glass bottles, metallic caps, foil labels, and glossy laminates all reflect the studio environment — lights, camera, photographer, and room are all visible in the product surface if the lighting is not carefully managed.
The diffusion principle: Any light that is not diffused will create sharp specular reflections on glossy packaging surfaces. The solution is to ensure every light source is large and soft relative to the product — by using a large softbox, a sweep of diffusion paper, or a light tent (a translucent box that surrounds the product with soft diffused light from all directions).
For glass bottles specifically: A light tent or sweep-lit table with a large reflector on the opposite side to the key light (to fill in the shadow side) is the most reliable approach for clear and transparent glass. The goal is a smooth, controlled highlight that shows the bottle's form without the reflection of the setup being visible.
For products with metallic surfaces (foil labels, metallic caps, canned goods): The metallic surface reflects the entire environment. Shooting in a white tent or using white reflectors on all sides creates a clean, white-reflected highlight. Any coloured or dark element in the environment will appear as a dark reflection on the metallic surface.
For matte packaging: Matte packaging (matte laminate cartons, uncoated kraft, matte glass) is significantly more forgiving of lighting because it diffuses rather than reflects. Standard two-light or three-light setups (key, fill, back/rim) work well without the reflection management needed for glossy surfaces.
Camera Settings for Pack Shots
Aperture: f/8–f/11 for a sharp front-to-back image of a product (assuming standard product photography distances). Wider apertures create a shallow depth of field that blurs the background creatively but may not keep all of a three-dimensional packaging structure in focus.
ISO: As low as possible (ISO 100–200) to minimise digital noise. Packaging photography is typically done on a tripod with controlled lighting, so there is no need for high ISO.
White balance: Set manually to match the colour temperature of the studio light. Auto white balance will shift between shots and create colour inconsistency across an image set.
Focus: Use autofocus for the primary focus point, then switch to manual focus and lock before shooting. Any vibration or adjustment between shots will shift the autofocus.
Colour Accuracy in Photography
This is the most technically demanding aspect of packaging photography and the one most often ignored. The goal is that the colours in the photograph accurately represent the printed colours on the packaging — because the buyer will compare the photograph to what they receive, and significant colour difference (particularly in brand-critical colours) creates disappointment and returns.
The two variables to control:
Camera colour profile: Shoot in RAW format, not JPEG. RAW preserves all the colour data captured by the sensor; JPEG applies in-camera processing that discards information. Post-process RAW files to a calibrated standard.
Display calibration: The monitor used to edit and approve packaging photography must be colour-calibrated. An uncalibrated monitor may show colours that appear correct on that specific display but are systematically different from the colours in the file — and from what appears on other displays or in print.
Styling Packaging for Photography
Scale Reference
Packaging photographs that include no scale reference leave buyers uncertain about the actual size of the product. A 250ml bottle and a 1-litre bottle look the same size in a photograph without a reference. Options for providing scale:
- Include multiple units (3 × 60ml bottles shows scale differently from a single bottle)
- Include a prop that communicates scale without distraction (a hand holding the product — allowed on Amazon secondary images)
- Include a shadow or environment that implies physical scale
Grouping and Range Photography
When a product comes in multiple variants (flavours, scents, sizes, or a range of products), range photography — all variants together in a single styled image — is important for DTC and social contexts. Range photography creates a visual identity for the range that individual product shots cannot.
Range photography requires physical samples of every variant before the shoot. Planning the shoot before all samples are available (expecting to composite or add variants in post-production) adds cost and risk.
Props and Surfaces
For lifestyle-adjacent packaging photography, the choice of surface and props communicates brand positioning as directly as the copy:
- Raw marble or stone: premium, clean, spa-adjacent
- Weathered wood or aged textures: artisan, craft, natural
- Concrete or industrial surfaces: urban, functional, performance-focused
- White linen or bleached cotton: wellness, calm, Scandinavian-influenced
- Dark mahogany or deep velvet: luxury, indulgent, heritage
Props (flowers, fruit, herbs, stones, fabric) amplify the positioning signal of the surface. The most common error is over-propping — cluttering the frame with thematic objects that compete with the product for attention.

Should I hire a professional photographer or shoot in-house? For the primary hero image and the core pack shot set, professional photography is almost always worth the investment. The quality difference between a well-lit professional pack shot and a home-studio pack shot is immediately visible in a side-by-side comparison — and the primary image is visible in every search result and every listing view. For social media lifestyle content, in-house photography with a good phone camera and reasonable lighting is more defensible.
What resolution do product photography files need to be? Amazon recommends a minimum of 1,000px on the longest side for zoom capability; 2,000–3,000px is more comfortable for use across multiple contexts. DTC websites typically need images at 1,500–2,500px for retina display quality. Export as sRGB JPEG at 80–90% quality for web use.
