Most brands approach their first packaging design project with the same set of questions: How long will this take? When do I see something? How many changes can I make? What do I get at the end?

The answers depend on the project and the studio, but the underlying process is consistent. Understanding it helps you participate in the right way at the right stages — which is the biggest factor in whether your project lands well on the first or third attempt.


Stage 1: Discovery and Brief (Days 1–2)

Before any design work begins, the designer needs to understand the project fully. A professional packaging design process starts with a structured brief — either a questionnaire the studio provides or a document you fill in. A complete brief covers:

  • Product name and exact physical dimensions
  • Packaging format (bottle, carton, pouch, box — with exact dimensions)
  • Printer and substrate, or confirmation that a printer hasn't been selected yet
  • Mandatory label text (all regulatory copy, in full)
  • Target buyer (specifically described, not demographically summarised)
  • Brand personality and visual references
  • Competitors the product will appear alongside
  • Deliverables needed (3D mockup, flat dieline, source files)
  • Timeline and hard deadlines

Most studios will come back after reviewing the brief with clarifying questions. This is the most valuable part of the process for both sides: questions reveal assumptions, and resolving them upfront saves revision rounds later.

What you should do at this stage: take the brief seriously. The quality of the brief is the biggest single predictor of first-concept quality. A vague brief produces a generic first concept. A specific brief produces something you can actually react to.


Stage 2: Research and Strategy (Days 2–4)

After the brief is confirmed, a good packaging designer will spend time understanding the category before touching any visual tools.

This means: looking at competitor packaging in the same retail environment, analysing what visual conventions the category uses (and which ones are clichés), understanding what the target buyer's existing relationship with the category looks like.

For regulated product categories (supplements, food, cosmetics, CBD), this stage includes reviewing the mandatory text against the regulatory requirements and flagging any questions about compliance before the design begins. Discovering a compliance problem at this stage costs a conversation. Discovering it at final artwork sign-off costs a redesign.

You typically don't see any output from this stage — it's internal work. But it's the reason a designer with specific category experience produces a better first concept faster than a generalist who hasn't worked in your category.


Stage 3: Concept Development (Days 4–10)

This is the creative phase. The designer produces initial design concepts — typically two or three distinct directions — that explore different visual approaches within the brief parameters.

What "a concept" includes at this stage:

  • Typography direction and hierarchy
  • Colour palette
  • Overall visual language (photography vs illustration, minimal vs expressive)
  • Key design elements on the principal display panel

What it doesn't include yet: a complete back-panel layout with all regulatory text typeset, 3D mockup rendering, or fully resolved secondary panels. Those come after a concept direction is chosen.

How many concepts should you see? Two to three is standard. One concept forces a binary accept/reject decision with no room to explore. Stage 4: Concept Refinement (Days 10–14)

Once the front panel concept is approved and refined, the full packaging layout is completed. This stage includes:

  • Back panel layout with all mandatory regulatory text (Nutrition Facts or Supplement Facts, ingredient list, allergen declarations, manufacturer address, warnings)
  • Side panels and gussets (for stand-up pouches) or additional panels (for cartons)
  • Barcode sizing and placement
  • Any secondary branding elements or usage instructions

This is the stage where the design interacts most directly with compliance requirements. If mandatory text is longer than the available space at compliant type sizes, the designer has to problem-solve the layout — which may require adjusting the visual hierarchy on the back panel, using a foldout panel, or revisiting the principal display panel layout.

If there are regulatory elements you haven't confirmed yet (final Nutrition Facts data, manufacturer address, barcode), flag them now. A back panel that has placeholder text in the mandatory elements will need a revision round when the real text arrives.


Stage 6: Pre-Press and File Preparation (Days 18–20)

Before any files are submitted to the printer, the artwork must be prepared specifically for print production:

  • Colour mode verified as CMYK throughout
  • All images checked at 300 DPI at final print size
  • All fonts outlined
  • Bleed extended to 3mm on all sides
  • Trim marks and safe zone verified
  • Pantone colours specified correctly

Stage 7: File Delivery (Day 20–21)

The final delivery package for a complete packaging project should include:

  • Print-ready PDF (PDF/X-1a or as specified by your printer) — the file that goes to the printer
  • Adobe Illustrator source file (.ai) — the editable master for future changes
  • Flat dieline PDF — the structural template showing cut and fold lines separately from the artwork
  • Pantone/CMYK colour specification sheet — the exact colour codes used
  • 3D mockup renders (if included in scope) — JPEG/PNG renders for listing images and marketing

What you do with these files:

  • Print-ready PDF → goes to your printer
  • Illustrator source file → stored securely; used when future design changes are needed
  • Mockup renders → used on Amazon listings, your website, advertising

File storage matters. The source file is the master — without it, future changes require rebuilding the design from scratch (at full design cost). Store source files somewhere backed up and accessible: cloud storage, not only on one computer.


Stage 8: Print Proof and Launch (Days 21–30+)

Final files delivered to the printer is not the end of the process. Before committing to a full production run, you should always request a print proof.

Physical proof options:

  • Digital proof — printed on an inkjet or digital press to verify colour and layout. Faster and cheaper than a press proof; useful for reviewing layout, hierarchy, and general colour direction.
  • Press proof — printed on the actual production press, with the actual inks and substrate. The most accurate preview of the final product. More expensive and slower, but the only way to truly see how Pantone colours, special finishes (matte laminate, foil), and the substrate interact with the design.

For supplement or food products, use the proof to verify that the barcode scans correctly. Barcode scanners at retail are calibrated for specific bar/space width tolerances — a barcode that looks fine visually may not scan reliably, and discovering this after a full production run is a serious problem.

For flexible packaging (pouches, films), verify that the proof was produced on the same film specification that the production run will use. Colour shifts between film types are real and significant.


How Long Does Packaging Design Take?

A single-SKU packaging project with two revision rounds typically takes 10–21 working days from the date of a complete brief to final file delivery.

Factors that extend timelines:

  • Incomplete brief requiring multiple back-and-forths before design work starts
  • Feedback arriving late between revision rounds
  • Multiple decision-makers providing feedback sequentially rather than consolidated
  • Regulatory text that isn't confirmed until after design work begins
  • Printer specification sheet that isn't available at project start

Factors that compress timelines:

  • Rush fee (typically 25–50% premium) — prioritises your project above others in the queue
  • Complete brief delivered at project start
  • Single decision-maker with authority to approve
  • All regulatory text confirmed before design begins

Rush delivery at 3–7 working days is available from most professional studios for an additional fee. It's a legitimate option when the timeline is genuinely constrained; it shouldn't be the default approach because compressing timelines compresses the time available for getting things right.


What a Good Packaging Design Process Protects You From

A structured process protects the brand from the most common and expensive packaging mistakes:

Redesign due to wrong dimensions — caught in the brief when product dimensions are confirmed and the dieline is built before design begins.
