Labels are the most common format in product packaging. Almost every bottle of sauce, supplement, skincare serum, and cleaning spray uses a pressure-sensitive label — a pre-printed, adhesive-backed sticker applied to the container surface.

The design challenge is different from folding cartons or pouches: you're working with a limited surface area that wraps around a curved, often transparent container, and the label must adhere correctly to the specific material and surface condition of that container. Getting either the design or the material wrong produces results that are immediately visible and consistently damaging to brand perception.


Label Types: Pressure-Sensitive vs Alternatives

Pressure-sensitive labels (PSL) are the industry standard for most product labelling. They consist of a face stock (the printable material), an adhesive layer, and a release liner that's removed before application. They can be applied by hand or by automatic label applicators at production speeds.

Alternatives:

  • Shrink sleeve labels: a printed film tube that shrinks to conform to the container shape when heat is applied. Full-container coverage, complex shapes accommodated, more expensive than pressure-sensitive. Used for products where 360-degree coverage and tamper-evidence are priorities.
  • Roll-fed labels: a film applied directly to the container using heat or adhesive at the bottling line; common in high-volume beverage production.
  • In-mould labels: printed labels incorporated into the plastic moulding process; permanent, no separate application, higher tooling cost. Used for high-volume household and dairy containers.
  • Direct printing: ink applied directly to the glass or plastic surface without a label substrate; requires specialist equipment; used for premium spirits and cosmetics at volume.

For most product brands producing at moderate volumes without specialist bottling lines, pressure-sensitive labels are the practical and economical choice. This guide focuses on PSL.


Label Face Stock Materials

The face stock is the printable material on the front of the label. Choosing the right face stock affects how the label looks, how it adheres, whether it survives refrigeration or moisture, and whether it can be recycled or removed.

Paper Face Stocks

Standard white paper: The most common and economical choice. Prints well with offset or digital. Appropriate for ambient-storage products where moisture and temperature variation aren't factors. Feels familiar and "natural" to consumers.

Premium paper (textured, uncoated, watercolour-finish): Higher perceived quality. Matt-coated, lightly textured, and uncoated papers produce a tactile and visual quality that signals premium or artisanal positioning. Common in craft spirits, specialty food, and premium personal care.

Wet-strength paper: Treated to resist moisture degradation. Required for products stored in refrigerators (which create condensation on glass surfaces), products stored in ice (craft beer, wine bottles in ice buckets), or products used in wet environments (bathroom products, hand soaps). Standard paper on a refrigerated product will degrade rapidly.

Kraft paper: Brown, natural-feel paper. Often used for natural, organic, and artisanal product positioning. Prints in a more muted, earthy palette due to the natural colour of the substrate.

Film Face Stocks

BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene): The dominant film label material for many product categories. Water-resistant, extremely durable, tears cleanly, and available in white, clear, and silver/metallised versions. Higher print quality than paper for photographic and fine-detail artwork. Slightly more expensive than paper.

Clear BOPP ("no label look"): Transparent film that, when printed with appropriate opaque inks and correct adhesive, appears to be printed directly on the container surface rather than on a label. Creates a premium, "no label" aesthetic. Requires careful artwork design — background areas intended to be clear must be left unprinted.

Polyester (PET): More rigid and tear-resistant than BOPP. Used for applications requiring dimensional stability — large labels on rigid containers, labels that must maintain their shape through extreme temperature variation.

Metallised film: Mirror-like metallic surface, either silver or gold. High-impact, premium appearance. Cannot be printed in white (the metallic surface is the background). Colour accuracy is affected by the metallic reflection underneath.


Adhesive Selection

The face stock choice determines the label's appearance. The adhesive determines whether it stays on the container. Getting this wrong produces labels that peel, bubble, or refuse to apply correctly.

Permanent adhesive: Standard adhesive for most product applications. Strong bond to most surfaces; the label cannot be cleanly removed without tearing or leaving residue.

Removable adhesive: Designed to be peeled off cleanly after application. Used for promotional labels applied over existing labels, temporary applications, and products where the consumer may want to remove the label.

Freezer-grade adhesive: Standard adhesives fail at very low temperatures — they lose tack and the label peels. Freezer-grade adhesive is formulated to bond at temperatures as low as -25°C (-13°F) and is required for frozen food products.

High-temperature adhesive: Required for products that experience elevated temperatures — oven-safe containers, candles, products stored in direct sunlight. Standard adhesive fails above approximately 90°C.

Water-activated adhesive (wet-strength): Combined with wet-strength face stock, used for products subject to ice or significant water immersion (wine bottles in ice, craft beer).

The container surface also affects adhesive selection. Glass, HDPE, PET, PP, and metals each have different surface energies and textures that affect label adhesion. Your label supplier should advise on the correct adhesive for your specific container material after testing.


Label Shape Options

Labels don't have to be rectangular. The shape of the label itself contributes to shelf differentiation.

Standard cut shapes: Rectangle, square, circle, oval — produced on standard die-cutting tooling available at most label printers at no additional tooling cost. The lowest-cost option.

Custom die-cut shapes: Any shape you define — the label is cut to a contoured shape, which can follow the design elements or product form. Requires a custom die (typically $150–$400 tooling fee amortised over the print run). Highly effective for brand differentiation; a label with a distinctive shape is immediately more memorable than a rectangle.

Wrap-around labels: A single label that wraps 360° around the container, with the back edge meeting or overlapping the front edge. Requires artwork built to the full circumference of the container as a flat template. Eliminates the need for a separate back label; all information appears on the single continuous label.

Front + back label system: Two separate labels — a front label carrying brand and primary marketing content, a back label carrying compliance information. Common for products with extensive mandatory text (supplements, food, beverages) that can't fit on a single compact label.


Layout Principles for Curved Surfaces

Designing labels for curved containers introduces constraints that don't exist in flat packaging design.

The visible face is narrower than the label width. When a label wraps around a cylinder, only the portion facing forward is visible at any given moment. On a 250ml round bottle with a 70mm circumference, a front label that's 70mm wide presents only about 50mm of forward-facing content to a viewer at a typical viewing angle. Elements placed near the edges of a wide label may be partially wrapped out of view.

Horizontal text near the edges of wide labels is foreshortened in perspective. Text that runs parallel to the horizon appears compressed at the edges where the label wraps away. This is rarely a problem for brand names and product names placed near the centre, but becomes visible on very wide labels with text running close to the left or right edges.

Vertical text wraps without distortion. Copy that runs top-to-bottom on a cylindrical label doesn't distort, because it follows the axis of the cylinder rather than wrapping around it. Some label designs use vertical text orientation for this reason.

Test the layout on the actual container before approving. A label dieline template should match the exact container dimensions. Apply a rough proof of the design to the actual container and view it from the buyer's perspective — at arm's length, in normal lighting — before finalising the artwork.


Mandatory Content Placement on Product Labels

For regulated product categories (food, supplements, cosmetics, alcohol, CBD), the mandatory content placement follows regulatory requirements regardless of the label format.

Principal Display Panel (PDP): The portion of the label most likely to be displayed to the consumer at point of purchase. On a bottle with a distinct front label, the front label is the PDP. Mandatory elements for the PDP:

  • Statement of identity (what the product is)
  • Net quantity of contents

Information Panel: Adjacent to the PDP (typically the back label). Carries remaining mandatory content:

  • Ingredient list
  • Nutrition/Supplement Facts panel (for food and supplements)
  • Manufacturer/distributor name and address
  • Allergen declarations
  • Any mandatory warnings

For cylindrical containers with a single wrap-around label, TTB and FDA regulations specify where mandatory content must appear within the label relative to its display orientation.


Labels are typically printed at smaller scale than other packaging formats, with the same technical requirements:

  • Colour mode: CMYK throughout (or Pantone spot colours correctly specified)
  • Resolution: 300 DPI minimum at final print size
  • Fonts: Outlined before delivery
  • Bleed: 2–3mm beyond the die-cut line (confirm with your label supplier)
  • Safe zone: 2–3mm inside the die-cut line for critical content
  • Barcode: Correct size, quiet zones, and black on white background

Label printing is typically done with digital inkjet or digital laser for short runs, or with flexographic or offset printing for longer runs. Verify which method your supplier uses and request their specific artwork specification — bleed and resolution requirements can vary.


Finishes for Labels

Matte laminate: Soft-touch appearance, non-reflective, perceived as premium. Widely used in supplement, cosmetic, and food labelling.

Gloss laminate: Vivid, protective, slightly plastic appearance. Lower cost than matte; appropriate for categories where maximum colour vibrancy is the priority.

Soft-touch laminate: Velvet-like tactile quality; the label equivalent of soft-touch packaging. Commands a significant premium perception increase.

Spot UV: Applied over a matte-laminated label to bring forward specific design elements in high-gloss relief. Logo, product name, or pattern elements highlighted in spot UV on a matte ground is one of the most effective premium label treatments.

Foil stamping: Metallic foil applied to specific areas — brand marks, borders, accent elements. Available in gold, silver, rose gold, and holographic. The prestige signal per pound spent is high on labels because the foil surface contrast is very visible at label scale.

What's the difference between a label and a sleeve? A label is a pre-printed adhesive material applied to a specific area of a container surface. A shrink sleeve is a printed tube of film that slides over the entire container and shrinks to conform to it under heat. Can I design a label for a container I don't have yet? Applying a label designed for a 250ml bottle to a 200ml bottle of the same shape will result in a label that doesn't fit correctly.

What adhesive do I need for a refrigerated product? At minimum, wet-strength face stock paired with a cold-temperature-rated adhesive. For products that will sit in ice (wine, craft beer), choose a wet-strength paper with a water-activated or ice-bucket-grade adhesive specifically tested for sustained cold moisture exposure. Do I need separate front and back labels, or can I use one label? For products with minimal mandatory text and simple front-panel content, a single wrap-around label can carry everything cleanly.
